Outcry In Australia Over Underage Fashion Models

Australian Fashion Week organizers faced a public outcry recently over hiring 14-year-old Polish girl Monika Jagaciak as the top model for next month's event in Sydney. Fashion week chief organizer Simon Lock took a stand on the issue of child models.

Lock stated that there has been criticism of the industry in the past for promoting the Lolita syndrome and then said that was something the AFW would not stand for. The South African Press Association reported that Lock said, "The designers love these models as coat hangers for their clothes. They don't want to exploit their sexuality in any way whatsoever."

One of Jagaciak's recent modeling assignments saw her under a shower posing in a white swimming outfit.

Lock's stand against young models lasted until mid-day, when rather than announce a change of heart himself, the AFW released a statement on his behalf stating that no models under 16 would be allowed to appear at the event and that Jagaciak could stay at school.

The statement said, "Policies are constantly revisited and endorsed by the AFW's industry advisory board to ensure the event best served the industry and reflected community attitudes towards issues surrounding the fashion industry."

This is the second time the AFW has caused a commotion. Last year Lock defended his right to send really thin models down the catwalk. He reportedly said that self-regulation was working and there was no need to ban waifs from working in the industry.

Sophie Dahl was discovered by Isabella Blow on a London street at the age of 18. At a voluptuous dress size and 38DD bra-size, Dahl defied the stick-thin modelling status quo; she is largely known for being a plus-size model, although she has since lost weight and is now of similar proportions to other fashion models. Her best-known work was a magazine and poster advertisement for an Yves Saint Laurent perfume called Opium, showing her lying naked on a black velvet sheet. There were many complaints about the advertisement, resulting in its being removed from billboards in the UK, and totally banned in France.

She got her start in the fashion industry when her mother enrolled her in modeling school at the age of fifteen at the Linda Layman Agency. Initially, she did runway work at a local mall on Saturdays. However, her big break came after she cut short her hair and went to Europe.

A local agency sent the now 5'9" brunette to Milan where her first shoot was posing for Italian Vogue. Soon after that, Amber got her first big break; the cover shoot for French Elle magazine by Hans Feurer. Not too long after that, Amber, like most models began residing in Paris. Amber immediately became a modeling sensation, having picked up where fellow supermodels Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer had left off. Photographers and magazines alike couldn't get Amber's face pasted on billboards and magazine covers fast enough.

Amber has since appeared in numerous prestigious advertising campaigns such as Versace, Calvin Klein's Escape, DKNY, Prada, Valentino, Jil Sander, Gucci and Chanel. She co-hosted MTV's House of Style with best friend and fellow model Shalom Harlow and she even became the face of Elizabeth Arden.

Valletta has gone on to act in several films, been on the cover of magazines and in advertisements for Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein and Versace and hosted MTV's House of Style with friend and fellow supermodel Shalom Harlow. Valletta was scheduled to appear on Punk'd on Season 6 Episode 3, along with David Boreanaz and Kristin Cavallari, but Kutcher had to move the prank played on Valletta to an episode later to make room for the prank played on Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens, which is based on his suspension on November 19, 2005, while playing for the Philadelphia Eagles.

The show, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), is being held from 8 to 11 July at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).

Seven group pavilions, from the Chinese mainland, .

The four-day fair showcases a broad array of fashion, accessories and garment-related products, including apparel and handbags, shoes, fashion jewellery and fabrics.

They are displayed in nine theme zones: Fabrics and Yarn Zone (new), Emporium de Mode, Infant and Children’s Wear Zone, Spice Arena, Body and Intimate Wear Zone, Bridal and Evening Wear Zone, Fashion Gallery, Garment and Accessories Mart and International Fashion Designers’ Showcase.

Speaking at opening ceremony, Vincent Fang, Chairman of the HKTDC Garment Advisory Committee, said that the exports of clothing and clothing accessories last year rose by a moderate 1.8 per cent, to US$28.77 billion (HK$224.4 billion).

“The sluggish US economy has inevitably affected our industry,” he said. “But Hong Kong garment companies are experienced, resilient and blessed with the flexibility to respond to changing market conditions.”

The challenging outlook of the US market is, however, compensated by the growth from emerging markets. Mr Fang said: “Growth in Hong Kong exports to the emerging markets is encouraging, with Argentina, the Czech Republic, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia and Turkey all recording more than 20 per cent growth from last year.”

During the fair period, seven fashion shows and eight special-topic seminars will be staged. One of the highlighted shows is the Hong Kong New Fashion Collection Award, which encourages Hong Kong companies to work with designers from Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland in building brand collections.

Held for the eighth time, it features nine contestants competing for three awards: the Casual and Jeans-wear Category Winner, the Party and Evening-wear Category Winner and the Overall Winner.

Early life and career
Karolína Kurková was born in Děčín, Czechoslovakia, to Josef Kurka, a Czech basketball player, and a Slovak mother.

After a friend sent photos of Kurková to an agency in Prague, she immediately landed a runway appearance, as well as a commercial and print ad. She was 15 at the time. Moving to the Big Apple, Kurkova, at the tender age of 17, received America’s recognition when she graced the cover of the February 2001 edition of Vogue, becoming one of the youngest models ever to appear on the magazine’s cover. Elizabeth Arden & Liz Claiborne enter distribution deal

Elizabeth Arden Inc and Liz Claiborne Inc announced that they have entered into an exclusive long-term global licensing agreement for the manufacture, distribution and marketing of the Liz Claiborne fragrance brands.

The Liz Claiborne fragrance portfolio consists of many well-known and highly-ranked products, including the Juicy Couture, Usher, Curve by Liz Claiborne, Lucky Brand and the Liz, Realities, Bora Bora and Mambo fragrances.

"This is a very strategic transaction for both companies," said E. Scott Beattie, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Elizabeth Arden, Inc. "We have worked closely together through our existing distribution relationship and are very familiar with the Liz Claiborne fragrance portfolio.

Specifically, this transaction will allow us to (i) benefit from improved market share and productivity in our North American fragrance business, (ii) gain efficiencies from a larger fragrance business, particularly within our supply chain, logistics and sales organizations, (iii) increase gross margins by converting existing mass customer sales from a distribution margin to an owned/licensed margin and (iv) provide additional sales volume to our fast-growing international business. We look forward to working collaboratively with the Liz Claiborne brand teams to continue Liz Claiborne's success with respect to the marketing and brand development of these distinctive fragrance brands."

William L. McComb, Chief Executive Officer of Liz Claiborne Inc., said, "Fragrance is an important equity enhancing category for our brands. For us to maximize profitability in this business going forward, however, we would have to make significant changes to how it is operated. Doing that right now would distract us from other initiatives currently underway that are core to our strategy.

Through this partnership with Elizabeth Arden, we can continue to successfully develop and market brand enhancing fragrances in a more capital efficient manner, leveraging our strength in brand building with Arden's expertise in developing and growing fragrance businesses. This is another example of how diligently we are pursuing our strategy.

We expect this transaction to have a positive impact on our 2008 cash flows and to have no impact on 2008 projected adjusted EPS and operating margin. Looking forward to 2009 and beyond, we expect the impact of the royalty income from this transaction to be accretive to both EPS and operating margin."

Elizabeth Arden expects this transaction to contribute to both net sales and earnings growth in fiscal 2009. Elizabeth Arden expects to incur advertising and marketing expenses paid by Liz Claiborne and other transaction related expenses during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2008 and the first half of fiscal 2009.

Additionally, Elizabeth Arden expects its gross margins to be impacted in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2008 and through the first half of fiscal 2009 by the sale of Liz Claiborne inventory that Elizabeth Arden acquired prior to the effective date as a distributor.

After including the full impact of these costs, Elizabeth Arden expects this transaction to be accretive to earnings in the first half of fiscal 2009. Elizabeth Arden will provide further discussion and guidance for fiscal 2009 during its fourth quarter fiscal year 2008 conference call in August 2008.

The effectiveness of the licensing agreement is subject to satisfaction of certain conditions, including satisfaction of the requirements of the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976, as amended. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Cindy Crawford biography

Cynthia Ann Crawford was born February 20, 1966, in De Kalb, Illinois. She was discovered by chance by a newspaper photographer, who noticed then 16-year old Cindy at work during her summer job of detasselling corn and took her a picture of her. The photo and the positive feedback surrounding Cindy's photogenic talents were enough to convince her to quit her day job and take up modelling.

Thanks to two summers of modelling, represented by Elite Model Management in Chicago, the All-American beauty proved to also have brains -- she traded in the glamorous life a model (at least temporarily) to study chemical engineering at Northwestern University, on scholarship.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Cindy was among the most popular supermodels, a ubiquitous presence on magazine covers, runways, and in fashion campaigns. In July, 1988, she became the first modern supermodel to pose nude for Playboy magazine, in a shoot by photographer Herb Ritts. In October, 1998 Crawford returned to the pages of Playboy for a second, more revealing nude pictorial. That issue was one of the magazine's all-time biggest sellers.

From 1989 to 1995, Crawford was host of MTV's House of Style. In the mid-1990s Crawford starred in famous Pepsi and Pepsi Stuff advertising. In 1995 Crawford took her first movie role in Fair Game. Her performance was panned by critics, and the film was a financial failure, with expenses of $50 million and $11 million takings at the box office. She has had several other minor acting jobs since then, none of which have been commercially or critically successful. The closest she has come to a commercially successful acting job has been her series of exercise videos.

She has been featured on the cover of many magazines, including Vogue, W, People, Harper's Bazaar, ELLE, Cosmopolitan, and Allure. Cindy also appeared in many fashion campaigns during her career, including those for Gianni Versace, Escada, Revlon, Ink. She has also worked for Omega, Maybelline, and Clairol. Of her, famous designer Karl Lagerfeld has said: "She is a classical beauty and the all-American dream girl." She was nicknamed "Baby Gia" when she entered the modeling industry because of her resemblance to the late supermodel, Gia Carangi.

In 2005, Cindy created a beauty product with Dr. Jean-Louis Sebagh called Meaningful Beauty for Guthy-Renker.

Maybe it’s just the unflattering bikini top, but the 34-year-old German beauty looked half the girl she used to be.Three children with pop hit hubby Seal, 45, seem to have taken a bit of a toll on her bust and tummy. An onlooker said: “She still looks great but kids play havoc with your body — and supermodels are no different.”Heidi was on her annual trip to Mexico to ‘re-marry’ Seal on the beach near their holiday home in Careyes, the venue for their original wedding in May 2005.One local said: “They are so in love and it is beautiful that they keep their passion alive by getting married in the same place every year.”So that’s one celebrity pair unlikely to lift and separate… unless Heidi gets herself a new bikini top.
